Developing a Defensive Mindset

Whether or not you carry a concealed handgun for defense, you are responsible for your own safety. In 1856, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that local law enforcement had no duty to protect individuals, but only a general duty to enforce the laws. (South v Maryland) The police simply can't be everywhere all the time.

We teach awareness as a way of life in our Concealed Handgun Classes. This means looking around, taking in your surroundings, assessing the potential dangers around you and taking steps to avoid them. Some of this comes naturally when you start thinking about it, but for many, developing a defensive mindset is new territory.

While advanced training is always a good idea, it's not always practical. But we can read. All of us can. Here are some suggestions - books, magazines, even videos to help you become and remain aware of your duty to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Texas Hunter's Education

Hunting season is well underway. Residents of Texas who were born after September 1, 1972 are required to complete a Hunter Education course before hunting in Texas. The Texas Hunter Education certification is honored in all 50 states and in most countries around the world. Some states require Hunter's Ed certification regardless of age. We're providing several opportunities to complete this certification process during the month of October. We teach the second and final part of the Home Study Course. Check out the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website for details.

Featured Handgun of the Month

When we attend advanced training sessions, we're naturally curious about the firearms used by our fellow students. Over the past few years, we've noticed a particular affinity for the Smith & Wesson M&P semi-automatic, especially among women instructors. When asked why they like it we get two main answers - ergonomics, or how it feels in the hand, and manageable recoil. Those are features appreciated by male shooters as well. There's certainly nothing "sissy" about the M&P. It was designed for Military and Police use.

When designing the M&P, Smith & Wesson's engineers started from scratch. It's design is not based on any other gun in the S&W inventory, though it does share some of the ergonomics with the Sigma and SW99. The M&P is a different gun, however. It looks different and feels different.

I have to tell you, it's one of the best feeling handguns to hold and shoot of any I've tried, and I've tried a bunch. The M&P is a striker fired semi-automatic pistol. This trigger system prevents the firearm from discharging unless the trigger is fully depressed, even if the pistol is dropped. Mine also has an internal lock that was developed to allow this particular model to be sold in Massachusetts.

The pistol frame is made out of Zytel polymer reinforced with a stainless steel chassis. The slide and barrel are made out of stainless steel that after through hardening is treated with a proprietary nitriding process called Melonite. The M&P has a low slide profile which makes the barrel axis close to the shooter's hand, which reduces muzzle rise and allows for faster aim recovery in rapid shooting sequence.

The M&P uses an internal striker, similar to the Glock or Springfield XD. When the trigger is pulled and the pistol cycles for the next shot, the striker is automatically pre-set to a 98% cocked position. Smith & Wesson calls this a striker-fired DOA only, but for pratical purposes, after the first shot, the trigger pull is like a single-action. The trigger pull is around 6.5 pounds, not bad at all.

The pistol also has a loaded chamber indicator viewing opening on top of the slide and comes with three interchangeable palm swell grips are included (small, medium and large). The trigger guard is designed to accommodate gloves. The frame of the M&P has a slide release lever on each side. The magazine drops free when the magazine release is pressed. The firearm features an ambidextrous slide stop and reversible magazine release for either right or left hand operation.

The standard iron sights are of the three dot type and made of steel. Both the front and rear sights are dove-tailed into the slide, and can be horizontally drifted to adjust for windage correction. An integrated Picatinny rail can be found underneath the slide on the front of the frame for attaching tactical lights, lasers and other accessories.

This is a gun we wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for a reliable and easy-shooting personal carry firearm. It may just replace the Beretta PX-4 Storm as my favorite shooting 9mm.
