Best Gun for a CHL

As we close this year, we'd like to share Jerry's take on the best guns to consider for your concealed handgun. David is in 100% agreement with Jerry on these guns. We don't take advertising from the manufacturers and are not worried here about hurting anyone's feelings. This list was developed from two sources:

  • Guns we personally own and use
  • Guns we see perform week-in and week-out on the range during our CHL Qualification Courses

Our Criteria for making these choices include, 1) it always goes "bang" when you pull the trigger, regardless of the ammo, 2) bullet size and ammo capacity, 3) Shooting comfort and controllability, 4) you can carry it.

Remember, when your life is on the line, you may only have one chance to shoot before you get shot, cut or otherwise overpowered. In this case, which is the gun you wish you had with you? Here are our picks:

  1. Sig 226/229
  2. Springfield XD/XDm
  3. Smith & Wesson M&P
  4. FNH FNP/FNX
  5. Glock - 17/19/22

These are the ones we trust foremost. Below are others in which we have confidence:

  1. Sig 2022 Pro
  2. Beretta PX4 Storm or Stoeger Cougar
  3. H&K USP
  4. Beretta M9/92SF/96
  5. Taurus 24/7 Pro

If it's available in a .45, get a .45. If not go with a .40 with 9mm being the next choice. You might be surprised to see we don't list any "mouse guns" here. It's our personal opinion that small .380 or 9mm guns with 6 or 7 rounds will give most people a false sense of security. In a situation where you fear for your life, those few, small rounds can be gone very quickly and the threat still be present.

You'll also note we don't list 1911s or some of the high-end pistols here. There's a reason. We see them jam on the range. Not just sometimes, but frequently. We hear lots of excuses, because in most cases a lot of money was spent on a gun that is supposed to be top of the line. It's a shame. Some of these manufacturers apparently spend enough money with the gun magazines to keep the writers from telling the entire story.

If You Decide to Carry, Carry

Quite a few people who come through our class and qualify for a Texas Concealed Handgun License, never carry their guns. We can understand that, if you decide it's just not for you. What I don't understand is those wo do decide to carry, but only carry some of the time. Our question to you is "How do you know whether you'll need your gun or not?" The biggest excuse we hear is that it's hard to conceal a firearm wearing certain clothing. That's true, but if you're truly concerned about your safety and the safety of your loved ones, you'll find a way. We can help. We've tried about every carry method available and know that when considering your body-size, environment and chosen handgun, there are options that will work for you. If you're stuck trying to decide among options, give us a call or shoot us an email and we'll share with you from our own experiences. We've learned to carry big guns everywhere it's legal all the time.

Please don't become a victim because you decided to leave your gun at home the one day someone decided they wanted what you have enough to kill for it.
